 COMMUNITY COLLEGES RALLY AT "CAPITOL DAY" More than 200 community college students and faculty members gathered at the Mississippi Capitol Feb. 18 to lobby lawmakers for more funding. Community college enrollments soared an average of 13 percent in the fall. East Mississippi Community College posted the largest increase, nearly 20 percent.
In 2007, state lawmakers and Gov. Haley Barbour committed to mid-level funding, a per-student funding level for community colleges midway between funding for K-12 students and regional public university students. But, to date, that commitment has not resulted in the needed mid-level funding.
Rep. Kelvin Buck, D-Holly Springs, and chairman of the House Universities and Colleges Committee, said state representatives will do what they can to make progress toward that goal – despite recent state budget cuts. n More: Press release

 CAREER BOOSTERS
EMCC students had a chance to get advice about resumes, and take part in mock job interviews, with volunteers from the business community at the college's annual Career Booster events, held Feb. 4 and Feb. 11. Career and degree counseling, and information about EMCC's Job Placement and Work-based Learning programs, was also available. More: Photo gallery, Career Boosters

 TIME GRANT: TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE
IN MANUFACTURING & ENGINEERING
EMCC hosted a kick-off reception on Feb. 2 for the TIME grant, a three-year opportunity for high school students, teachers and counselors to explore job skills needed by modern technology companies. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the $900,000 TIME grant is a partnership among Mississippi State University, EMCC and Itawamba Community College. The first group of students to participate, from Columbus High School, was invited to the kick-off – along with parents, teachers, counselors and MSU officials. The 18 students have already begun taking classes in the evenings at EMCC, learning skills like precision measurement, blueprint reading and manufacturing concepts. n More: Photo gallery, TIME kick-off

 SCHOLARS’ OLYMPIAD
More than 100 high school students competed for scholarships during the Scholars’ Olympiad at East Mississippi Community College. The annual event, now in its fourth year, was held Feb. 5 at the college’s Golden Triangle campus. Participating students came from eight high schools in the EMCC district. The overall school winner was New Hope High School. West Point High School took second place, and Caledonia High School finished in third place. n More: Listing of scholarship winners
